Taiwan; Tian Tian Li, LongShan Temple & Taipei Main Station

Day 3 - 21 August 2018

Breakfast at Tian Tian Li (天天利) -

This is another breakfast place recommended online. The eatery looks quite old and cramped, so if you are looking for a more comfortable location, this is probably not for you. If the taste of the food is your only criteria, I think this is worth the try.

I was craving for the braised pork beehoon when I saw someone eating it (but why the menu only have braised pork rice). Unfortunately, I ordered the wrong dish! I don't know what was on my mind when I ordered the mushroom sauce beehoon. I think the taste is pretty good though. The beehoon in Taiwan is really nice, seems to be thinner and more chewy. 很有嚼劲. The pork meat for my dish is quite starchy.

I tried the meat ball noodles and I think the soup is comfort food and warms up the stomach in the morning. There's only 1 meatball! But it is of a reasonable size. The other noodle (沙茶) taste soury and kind of like lor mee with vinegar. Upon googling, it should be made with some special local paste/sauce.

The egg omelette and carrot cake is about the same taste everywhere. With sauce.

The bad thing about this place is there is no drinks option. If I remembered correctly, there is only mineral water. You have to drink your morning coffee elsewhere.

Prayers at the Longshan Temple -

Taking the metro one stop down to Longshan station, we reached the beautiful temple of worship. The sun was scorching but it does not stop us from taking nice shots by the waterfall ;p.

You have a choice to purchase joss sticks and candles but the temple provides 1 complimentary joss stick per person.  It feels kind of weird to be only holding 1 stick.

My bf (now fiance :p) and I prayed to Yue Lao to bless our marriage life. And then his brother was told to pray for love as well, so he can meet his potential gf soon haha.

Exploring a little bit of Taipei Main Station -

Lunch at NY Bagels at Q Square-

We were searching for a coffee place and we found the perfect place for lunch as well! I love breakfasty meals and I ordered smoked salmon and eggs benedict! Is it back to Australia once moreee?

Our meals come in a set with drinks. I ordered a cold long black and it was so good! It was the right bitterness and richness of coffee combined. If I am not wrong, it is re-fillable. My dish came with this small little bottle of juice looking liquid. My bf said it was the sauce of the salad (lol), but it turns out that I was right. It is a very refreshing lime juice. The base of the salmon egg benedict are bagels, which taste a bit crispy like scones. I absolutely love it. The roast potatoes and butter spinach on the side is delicious as well.

I tried only the other dish that my bf ordered - Beef steak risotto. It is a mixture of strong tasting herbs and mint together. The steak is nice, but the risotto might not be so enjoyable. It is either you like it or you dislike it.

Regardless, my choice was fantastic and the coffee is heavenly :D.

Just some window shopping

We split up and shopped around. There's a Tokyu Hands at Q Square and I was intrigued with the many wooden musical carousels. They are all displayed in a big glass case and labelled by the number. You can play the music of that particular design by pressing the buttons at the side. There are so many of them with the toy story characters and the theme song!

I stood there admiring the beautiful displays for quite awhile.

If there was one with "my heart will go on" as the music, I will definitely get it. We could not find this song at Otaru Music box museum as well. There were so many beautiful designs to choose from but I had a super difficult time to decide on one to buy. My mind was set to purchase one regardless.

We walked to the Taipei underground shopping street and walked from Y1 to Y28. It is really a distance and there are a variety of things to see. The first few shops looked so old. While it was an experience to stroll down that long lane, there was nothing much that interest me.

Slurping the mian xian from Ah Zhong -

We went back to Ximen area and finally tried the famous Ah Zhong mian xian. Initially, my bf and I were supposed to be sharing 1 big bowl (NT$70), but he went to add chilli into the rice vermicelli. The chilli made the whole bowl so spicy!

Irritated, I went to buy myself a smaller sized bowl (NT$55) of mian xian. Without any additional sauce, I think it is already delicious. The ingredients found in the rice noodle is neither oyster nor pork ribs, but pig intestines! Although I prefer oysters, I think it is still acceptable for me. It is just like the intestines in kuey chap.

Do note that you have to stand around to enjoy the hot bowl of goodness. There are no tables and seats for the customers.

We also tried the XXL chicken cutlet. I was quite surprised to find the chicken bone within the cutlet. Apparently, they do not debone the chicken in Taiwan? I am not so sure since I only ate chicken cutlet once during this trip.

There's also a beef noodles store called 牛店. We were among the last few to get a table and many items were sold out. The beef is amazingly good! It was tender, soft, and without the pungent beef taste. I liked the soup base as well, clear but rich. This shop is really popular, so do go early and take your queue number.

The day ends with a sausage which taste so fatty.
Somehow the one we had at Raohe night market was better.
