Japan - Ameyoko Market, Asukusa & Akihabara

Day  12 - 23 January 2019

Breakfast at Ameyoko Market

We started the day late so that I can replenish my lost sleep from the day before.
Feeling refreshed, we headed to Ameyoko Market for our breakfast.

We only had three types of food there - Takoyaki, Donburi and corndog.

I was definitely looking to have more takoyaki in Tokyo and I found my favourite of them all! Minatoya meets all my criterias for a satisfying delicious takoyaki. The outer skin is crispy and the inside is moist and soft. The best part is that we get to put the sauces to our own preference! Spam the mayo and bonito flakes for a wholesome rich taste. While being the best, we can see a significant amount of oil used to achieve this awesome goodness.

I even had a second serving. It is quite affordable (400 Yen for 8).

I have also heard that Minatoya serves really affordable and fresh Donburi seafood bowl. We went for a half bowl option (600 Yen) to play safe since we can't eat too much raw stuff. The mini bowl turns out to be a little disappointment. The seafood did not taste as fresh as expected. The sea urchin especially, was not sweet tasting. After our market experience in Osaka, I would say the seafood in Kuromon Ichiba market is way better.

Kuromon Ichiba market seems to have more options of food in my opinion and was a more worthwhile trip. There's still many other merchandise shops along the long stretch of Ameyoko market of course, but food wise, it is not too good.

As for the corndog, we bought the wrong one without the hotdog. It was flour and mashed potato. Okay okay la.

A day in Asakusa

We trained down to Asakusa and it was buzzling with people. You can definitely see more in the day. Most stores along the street to the Senso-ji are opened and you can slowly stroll through.

I found a super nice hot honey lemon drink. The Ito-en brand one is the best tasting.

Fancy some Matcha Ice Cream?

Taste the richest and highest level of the matcha ice cream at Suzukien Asakusa. A group of tourists were also walking along with us to the very same store.

I am not too sure which is the other flavour we tried, but both are really good. The matcha flavour may be intense for those who are not fond of this flavour, but I found it really suited to my liking. It is quite thick and has a bitter aftertaste. The only issue was that I found the ice cream not sticky enough and seem to fall off the cone easily.

Another definite must-try is the melon pan. Although the word melon is there, we read that there is no melon flavour at all. The name is such because of its appearance.

The bread was served warm and the crispy outer layer is so amazingly good. It is lightly sweet and very fragrant.

Dinner at Ippudo

Back to Asakusa again, we had our much loved wanton-mee like ramen. It did not taste like how I remembered it this time but was still satisfying in my tummy. The husband ordered a different spicier version and totally disliked it. It tasted similar to the Chinese Ma La.

We had our dessert at the lovely Taiyaki store along the same street. The quality and taste is still quite the same. You have the option of red bean or sweet potato filling and both are great in their way.

Akihabara at night

One of my plans was to find a dance dance revolution machine in Japan and really play it at the country of origin. We were not sure whether we would find one, since many new types of arcade games are developed and DDR becomes less popular.

Now I can say we fulfilled one of the stuff in our bucket list! Boots are not suitable for this.

Our bodies were warmed up but sweating in our shirt and then walking out in the cold is not the best feeling though.
